Can’t believe Ramadan is in 2 days and I’m so behind on preparing for it. The day just gets away from me with the baby and other mom duties, housework and blog work but now it’s crunch time, I really need to get organized in the next 2 days.
My 7 year old and I did this fun craft yesterday and made a spring inspired Ramadan Calendar. She loves counting down to Eid using the calendar. I try to do a few crafts every year to get her excited about Ramadan and Eid. Before Ramadan starts, I gift her a Ramadan Basket that includes her Eid outfit and other accessories or craft supply she loves. And this year as she is a bit older, unlike previous years, I added a good deed (similar to an act of kindness) typed in a piece of paper in each of the envelope instead of adding only treats. I also added some candies as an added bonus.
SUPPLIES REQUIRED:
- A stick: it could be even a tree branch which gives it a more rustic, natural look. I’m just using a bamboo stick from Dollarama.
- Jute rope or twine
- Any faux floral garland, I’m using an old one from Dollarama.
- 30 small brown paper bags
- 30 small decorative clothespins
- A marker
- A stencil (optional)
THE PROCESS
For me, the most time consuming part was writing down the numbers on the brown bags using the stencil. But you can totally skip this part and free hand write the numbers if you have good hand writing but mine is pretty bad and last year’s Ramadan Calendar turned out looking quite messy because of it and that’s why I’m using a stencil this year.
So after writing the numbers on the brown bags, I filled them up with 1 or 2 “good deed” or “an act of kindness” written/typed on a piece of paper. I kept them fun including crafts like; making Eid card for friends, painting a kindness rock etc. however I made sure to put those ones on the day of Ramadan that falls on a weekend so me or her dad can help her in case she needs help with them. I also added some candies randomly throughout the bags.
And then I wrapped the stick with the floral garland. I didn’t need to use any wire or glue to secure it as the garland was very lightweight and just wrapping around and tying a knot at each end held it up quite well.
After that I tied a piece of twine on the stick which will be used to hang the entire calendar.
Then I cut the twine in 6 equal pieces with each piece about 1.5 ft long. And then I secured 5 brown bags to each twine using decorative clothespins.
And that’s it! I kept it simple and didn’t add any Ramadan Sign as I’ve hung it in her playroom where there will be other Ramadan decorations slowly added in the next few days and I didn’t want everything to look too cluttered.
Hope you liked this simple Ramadan craft that can be done with your children. All the supplies used are from Dollarama.
