Does the enormous pile of annoying computer cords drive you crazy and are you tired of spending money on DIYs that end up costing way more than you want to for simple solutions? Then look no further, you are at the right place. I have a super easy and inexpensive solution for your office cord clutter!
I’ve been working from home for almost a year during the outbreak of coronavirus throughout 2020 and will continue to work from home for what it seems like the majority of 2021. I have a tiny office with two gigantic computer screens, an ancient computer and accessories that I borrowed from my employer and these work computers are ugly as hell and they came with million different cords that come on my way every time I’m sitting at my desk. I would literally step on the adapters, extension cords, etc. a few times a day; it’s almost like stepping on a Lego but it’s even worse because these pieces have cords attached! It is also the very first thing that comes in sight as soon as I walk into my office. And today I just had enough of this mess and took matter into my hands and let me show you how easy it was to get rid (hide) of the cord madness.
Supplies Needed
This easy and affordable solution for office cords only needs 2 things and in my case I already had them in my house so I just repurposed those items but if you have to buy them, you can get them at any home decor or office supply store or even Dollarama!!
- A storage box with lid that has a hole in each side (if your storage box doesn’t have a hole, you can easily make a hole yourself.)
- A white poster board
The Process
Step 1
The first thing that I did is untangled every single cord and made sure they are all separated and then I secured some of the narrow cords like the ones of keyboard and mouse, behind the screen that had a hook like part in it (shown bellow):
Step 2
The next thing that I did is secured the big cords of the 2 big monitors and tucked them into the groove of desk (shown below). I also connected one cord separately on a wall outlet as plugging both cords into the same extension cord was getting very cluttered.
Step 3
Then I took ALL the cords through the hole of the storage box and placed the extension cord in it and plugged ALL those cords into the extension cord.
And then once I covered the box it looked a whole lot better than it did before but all those cords were still very much visible (shown below):
Step 4
Okay so don’t laugh or judge at this part okay? We are planning to sell this house this year and I didn’t want do any work here that would be permanent (because why waste money or bother?) so this was my temporary solution to hide the rest of those cords . What I did is, I just took the poster board and let it stand over the storage box and in front of the cords and voila! Also honestly it is pretty functional because the board is not coming on my way when I sit or anything. It is just loosely standing above the box with no problem and hiding my biggest eyesore. I am sorry to disappoint if you were expecting a permanent solution or like a cool DIY! But I’m a frugal AF mom and now my office feels clutterfree and organized and it works for me, so I’m VERYYY happy with the results!
Let’s do a before-after just for fun:
Tell me, would you try this hack to hide your cords, if you had little to no budget? You can be honest, this is a totally judgment free zone!! 🙂
Until next time!!
