I’m sure many will agree that bedroom is the least loved room in a house. We usually go out of our way to decorate the living room and the kitchen especially if it’s an open concept living + kitchen. Even bathrooms get more importance than bedrooms (lol) may be because of the frequency of its use (if it sounded like I’m demeaning bathrooms over the other rooms, I didn’t mean to but think of it in a context, you get it, I’m sure you get it, lol). Realistically speaking, for a quite valid reason, bedrooms are often the most neglected room and primarily because we spend very little time in there. It’s just a place we sleep in, so why bother, right? Secondly, bedroom is usually off limits for guests/outsiders so there might be a tendency of putting the tidying/decorating to the back burner. And most of the time, the decorating ideas barely come into the implementation stage because “hey who cares! No one’s gonna see this room.” Well, YOU are gonna see this room at least for an hour or so every night while YOU finish reading that book or catch up on messages on Instagram before you doze off. Also you’d spend a good chunk of your time here on Saturday or Sunday mornings when you are not sleeping but still want to lay in bed and soak up all the laziness before dealing with the crazy of Monday! Hey, if you’re fancy, you might be having breakfast in bed in that very room. Now, wouldn’t you like the room to feel fresh and cozy for at least those few hours? The answer is usually “yes” but we are naturally very intimidated by the thought of the word “makeover”. But it doesn’t have to be! Makeover doesn’t have to be a costly renovation project especially if you are totally incapable of handling the smallest DIY projects like me! So how can you do a makeover, you asked? Well that’s the whole point of this post. Your girl got your back! 😉
1. Have a vision
We live in a world where gathering information is extremely easy and usually within a few clicks you can create a whole new board full of your favorite décor inspirations. Yes, I’m referring to Pinterest. I don’t know what I did before Pinterest. I cannot think of my life before it! But Instagram is also becoming a very good source of home décor inspirations, you just gotta look under the right hashtags and eventually find the right home décor girl. So after pinning hundreds of bedroom decor inspos, you will get an idea of what you want your bedroom to look like and then start planning from there.
I had an earthy, boho theme in mind where I wanted a few tribal accent pieces with neutral colors and I started making my shopping list based on that theme.
2. Make a list of items you MUST HAVE
Once you have a theme in mind, you need to make a list of new items that you want to add to your room.
For me, it was a challenge as I was not moving to a new place where I could work with a clean slate which would’ve been much easier and cost effective. But, I’ve lived in my current home for 2.5 years and decorated it fully to every wall and inch of it when I moved in. So for me there was some guilt involved as I was having to get rid of some perfectly good conditioned items just because I did not like them anymore. A huge waste, I know and I hate waste more than anybody but my love for décor triumphs that guilt, I guess. So I came up with an idea where I found a middle ground so I didn’t have to compromise with my principles fully yet I was able to satisfy my cravings of re-decoration.
So I listed all the items I wanted to dispose of on a site where people buy/sell used items. This was a win/win as I made some money off of it and the buyer got something they liked at fraction of the original price. I could’ve donated them but I could not manage buying everything brand new without some help.
So in my list, the MUST HAVES were a rug, an accent throw, a few low cost wall hanging decors and last but not least accent pillows. Trust me, just by switching pillows ONLY, you can make a room look totally different! So yes, always make sure to have throw pillows in your MUST HAVES list.
3. Have a budget
Now that you have a theme, thousands of pictures pinned from Pinterest and you have your MUST HAVES list, now what? Well now you gotta decide how much you want to spend purchasing these items that are on your list. I actually make a general budget which entails the grand total I am willing to spend on them and then I allocated separate budget for each item. For Example, I did not want to spend more than $50 for the small rug beside the bed. Similarly you will decide a max dollar you are willing to spend on each of your MUST HAVE items.
4. Compare options
If you find your items in a store, don’t buy it right away. Check at least one more shop or online. This is true for shopping anything really. Always do your price research and then make your purchase. But if the items you are looking for are one of a kind and unique which cannot be found at comparable stores then by all means buy it right away as long as it’s within your budget.
And lastly ask your husband to watch your child for a few hours on a weekend and go crazy putting everything together and create your masterpiece!

I am so happy that without much effort, I was able to give our bedroom the makeover it badly needed. Now I actually LOVE spending time in there and I hope using these simple tips, you can also give your bedroom the makeover of your dreams!
